Tripura is the second smallest state in India. It was formally declared a Union Territory on November 1, 1957 and elevated to the status of a full-fledged state on January 21, 1972.



Physiography: Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on all sides, except for a narrow neck in the north-east, where it borders on Assam and Mizoram.

History: Tripura was a state of great antiquity having been ruled by the Maharajas for 1,300 years before its accession to the Indian Union on October 15, 1949. With the reorganization of states on Sept. 1, 1956 Tripura became a union territory. The territory was made a state on January 21, 1972.


Administration: The Legislature has a single chamber–the Legislative Assembly. The jurisdiction of the Guwahati High Court extends over Tripura, with a bench functioning at Agartala. Tripura is divided into four districts, 10 administrative sub-divisions, 177 tehsils and 5215 villages.

Economy: Of the total geographical area of 10,49,169 hectares, net area sown is only 28,100, and forest 606,168 hectares. Area irrigated is 58910 hectares. Agricultural production (1998-99): Rice–490,110 M.T, Sugarcane–42950 M.T.; Jute-10,000 bales, Mesta–15,250 bales; Potato–82, 000 M.T. Rubber–6,346 M.T. There are 55 tea gardens, production being 4925 M.T. Production of fish–28,410 tons. Per capita (GSDP) state income (1998-99) was Rs.6200 (At current prices).

Industry:Registered factories–1282. Workers: 29000.
Handloom weaving is the single largest industry. It is essentially a tribal household industry. The sericulture industry is developing fast. Energy generated–337.68 m.u National highway–333 km. District roads–1917 km.Tripura is abundant in natural gas and a number of gas-based industries have
sprung up. Foundation has been laid for a Rs. 126 crore methanol project of the state owned Tripura Petro-Chemicals Ltd. There are 809 small scale industrial units in Tripura.


There are two major insurgent groups in Tripura - the National Liberation Front of Tripura, and the All Tripura Tiger Force. Both want the non-tribals who have come and settled in Tripura after 1949 to go. In Mar. 97, the final phase of the repatriation of Chakma and other tribal refugees of the Chittagong Hill Tracts from Tripura began.The Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council plans to constitute a separate police force for the tribal-dominated council's jurisdiction.Tripura passed a resolution in July 2000 condemning forcible conversion from one religion to another in the state.

Tourism: Important tourist centres are Nirmahal, Sipahijala, Dumboor Lake, Kamala-sagar, Jumpui Hill, Unakoti and Matabari. The government has set up an advisory committee to boost tourism.
