Physiography: Chhattisgarh is situated in the central part of India. It is bounded by Andhra Pradesh on the south, Orissa on the east, Maharastra on the south west and Jharkhand state on north west. Chhattisgarh consists of about one third of former Madhya Pradesh's geographical area and population. This area boasts 44 per cent of MP's total forest land.
History: The state of Madhya Pradesh was created in 1956. There were no demands then for a separate state of Chhattisgarh, mainly because MP's first chief minister Ravi Sankar Shukla, hailed from Chhattisgarh. The agitation for a
separate state of Chhattisgarh started in mid–1960s .Dr. Khubichand Baghel, a
Congress Rajya Sabha member from this region was the first man who raised a
slogan in favour of a separate state. The credit of launching the first political
organisation bearing the name Chhattisgarh goes to Shankar Guhi Niyogi. He
launched Chhattisgarh Mukthi Morcha and was killed in 1991 . Unlike in harkahand and Uttaranchal there was no popular movement in Chhattisgarh.
Economy: Chhattisgarh is rich in natural resources, mainly minerals, power, and
forest products. Revenue from forest products and mining from bauxite, coal and
iron ore collects rs. 300 crore and Rs.400 crore respectively. The well endowed
Baldia mines, numerous power projects, the steel plant at Bhilai and many cement factories will go to Chhattisgarh.
Politics :Chhattisgarh State Assembly has a strength of 90 seats. Chhattisgarh's representation in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha is 11 and 5 seats respectively.
