Physiography: The newly created Jharkhand state is situated in the southern part of Bihar state. Jharkhand is bounded by Bihar on the north, West Bengal on the east, Madhya Pradesh on the west and Orissa on the south. Jharkhand accounts for the 45 % of former Bihar's geographical area. History: Movement for a separate state of Jharkhand was active from the late thirties . In 1950, Moreng Gonke formed the Jharkhand Party, which contested the 1950 election with the aim of strengthening the demand for an adivasi homeland. His party emerged as a major opposition in the Bihar Assembly with 21 seats. The party repeated its performance in 1957, but in 1962 its base had dwindled. The movement for an Adivasi homeland attained new momentum when Santhal leader Shibu Soren formed Jharkhand Mukthi Morcha (JMM) in 1972. In 1995, the Jharkhand Area Autonomous Council (JAAC) was set up after a tripartite agreement between the Union government, the Bihar government and Jharkhand leaders. After long years of agitations, the dream of a Jharkhand state has been fulfilled at last–on Nov.1,2000.
Economy: The per capita revenue of the Jharkhand State is around Rs. 3000. The major contributor of the Jharkahand economy is the vast treasure of minerals. It contributes Rs.1500 crore to the Jharkhand economy. Jharkhand has rich reserves of iron ore and coal and several industries. Transfer of major industries such as Tata's will contribute an annual revenue of Rs. 3,775 crore to Jharkhand state.
Politics: The Jharkhand assembly has 81 seats. Jharkhand can send 14 members to Lok Sabha and 6 members to Rajya Sabha. The party position in the present assembly indicates an upper hand for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA).Party Position Labels: Jharkhand
